Doctors recommend drinking 8 glasses of water a day. Yet in many places up to 95 percent
of people don’t have access to safe, reliable sources of water. Women and children,
instead of working or going to school, spend hours every day fetching water for livestock and
family members. Often the water they bring home is contaminated, causing illness and
even death. Poor land management practices, sometimes handed down from generation
to generation, contribute to the degradation of water sources. Droughts kill crops in one
region of the world, while floods wash away others. In nearly every country, ending
poverty means managing water.
